Project Updates
The Village of Indian Head Park has had the objective of providing pedestrian and bicycle accommodations along Wolf Road since the Village’s Plan Commission approved the Wolf Road Pathway Study in the 1990’s. Recently, the following steps have been taken to further this objective:
- August 2018 – The Village’s Board of Trustees approved the Intergovernmental Agreement with the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) to explore the feasibility of adding a shared-use path and sidewalk along Wolf Road between 72nd Street and Plainfield Road. The Feasibility Study was primarily funded through an Invest in Cook grant provided by DoTH. The Feasibility Study process resulted in a determination that adding bicycle and pedestrian facilities along Wolf Road would be difficult without making any modifications to the roadway given the current open ditch drainage system and other physical constraints, such as the Lyonsville Cemetery. Therefore, it was concluded that these improvements could be added most efficiently if they were included as part of a larger roadway project.
- June 2020 – The Village’s Board of Trustees approved an Intergovernmental Agreement between the Village and DoTH for a Phase I Study of Wolf Road between 79th Street and Plainfield Road, including an evaluation of roadway improvements as well as potentially adding a sidewalk and shared-use path along Wolf Road.
- September 2020 – The Wolf Road Phase I Study began.
- April 2022 – The Wolf Road Phase I Study conducted Public Information Meeting #1. Due to the amount and type of feedback received, it was decided that more robust outreach activities would be beneficial throughout the remainder of the project.
- February 2023 – The Village’s Board of Trustees amended the Intergovernmental Agreement between the Village and DoTH for the Wolf Road Phase I Study. This amendment was supported by additional DoTH funding and enhanced the project’s public involvement efforts by establishing a Corridor Advisory Committee and hosting additional public information meetings.
- September 2023 – The Wolf Road Phase I Study website and survey launched.
- November 2023: Survey closed and feedback was collected
- December 2023: Survey results were posted and presented at CAC Meeting #1.
- January 2024 to July 2024: The Study Team continued to evaluate feedback while developing preliminary roadway alternatives.
- July 2024: The Study Team presented new preliminary roadway alternatives at CAC Meeting #2.
- August 2024 to November 2024: The Study Team revised the preliminary roadway alternatives based on feedback from CAC Meeting #2.
- December 2024: The Study Team conducted Public Meeting #2 to present the preliminary roadway alternatives to the public.
- January 2025 to February 2025: The Study Team collected and evaluated public feedback after Public Meeting #2.
- March 2025: The Village of Indian Head Park and Village of Burr Ridge indicated their support for Alternative 1: Baseline Sidewalk as the Preferred Alternative. Their letters of support can be seen here.
- April 2025 and onward: The Study Team will refine the Preferred Alternative to determine specific roadway footprint, drainage, structural, environmental, and potential property impacts. This portion of the Study will involve substantial coordination with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, and other jurisdictional agencies and will take time to work through.
